Walnut Balls

23 July 09

These are pretty good old-fashioned type cookies. They are reminiscent of the Middle-Eastern nut cookies, but are really traditional Old South. I’m not really that crazy about these, but Herself is gaga about them and really makes yummy noises when I make them for her.

2 sticks unsalted butter (1 cup), at room temperature
70 g brown sugar (1/3 cup)
5 g vanilla (1 tsp)
300 g flour (2 cups)
3 g salt (1/2 tsp)
200 g finely chopped walnuts (2 cups)
powdered sugar

Cream butter, sugar, and vanilla together. Add all the dry stuff except walnuts and mix thoroughly. Add in the walnut and mix well. Roll 1 to 1-1/2 tablespoonfuls of batter into balls and put on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake at 375F for 12 to 14 minutes. You want them to be just barely beginning to brown. Immediately roll in powdered sugar when they come out of the oven. If the sugar won’t stick, then brush melted butter onto the balls before rolling them in the powdered sugar. If you want to use regular sugar then you will need to do the melted butter brush first.

The powdered sugar and nut mixture is very reminiscent of Middle-Eastern cookies.
